Durrow Scarecrow Festival 2017.

Entry Information.


 

Entries are now being taken for the All Ireland Scarecrow Championships 2017.

A Local Community prize will be awarded this year and will be judged on scarecrows in different areas of Durrow with a prize of €200 awarded to the best area, please see terms and conditions on the adjoining page.

All scarecrow Entries must be in place by Friday 28th July at 7.00pm and must remain in place until close of business on Monday 7th August 2017

Categories and Entry Fee

The categories and prices for entry to the competition have been identified as follows:

  1. Most Topical €10.00
  2. Most Humorous €10.00
  3. Open / General €10.00
  4. Preschool / School entries €10.00
  5. Youth with Adult Assistance €10.00
  6. Youth (under 16) €5.00

Awards

A prize fund of €3,000 is available.

€500 will be awarded to the Overall Winner with the remainder of the fund being divided at the discretion of the judges.

€200 will be awarded for the Local Community Award

Large Hay bale Competition is a separate competition, prizes are not awarded from this prize fund

The number of awards per category will be weighted in accordance with the number of entries in the category.

Local Community Award

A prize of €200 will be awarded to the best area for displaying scarecrows.  A minimum of ten scarecrows must be on display to be considered for this award.  There is no separate entry required, the judges will consider each area in their judging process.  The Square, Old Esso Station and any DDF Display Scarecrows will be excluded from this judging process.  Areas will be judged as follows

Cork Road and Patrick Street Barnhill and Carrigean Street
Erkindale Drive Swan Road
St. Fantan’s Terrace Mill Road to include Green Display Area
Derry Road Chapel Street and Mary Street
Sean Doire Derry Wood

 

Judging Process

Materials Used (10 Marks)

Judging will be based on the variety of materials used. SOME STRAW MUST BE USED AND MUST BE VISIBLE.

Design / Appearance (10 marks)

The entry will be judged on the overall finish and the attention to detail.  How is the piece constructed?  Is it durable? Are there any working parts?

Creativity (10 Marks)

Judges will assess the individuality of the piece. How it reflects the style of the creator, where its positioned etc.

Concept (10 Marks)

Judges will assess the overall idea… The Big Picture:

 

If you feel that your concept would be best explained by including a ‘small’ explanatory piece of text with the scarecrow, please feel free to do so. This is particularly important if your scarecrow concept relates to local news, events, etc. Remember to ensure that the piece is full weather proofed!
